Luling is thirty minutes from San Marcos, an hour from Austin, ninety minutes from San Antonio. Long enough to feel like you went somewhere. Short enough to do on a weekday afternoon if you can sneak out.

Here’s the itinerary I’d give a friend driving in.

10:00 — Park and start with brisket.

Drive in, park on Davis Street (free), walk to City Market at 633 East Davis. Get there at 10 even though they open at 10 — the line moves fast but the meat sells out and the can be long. Order brisket, sausage, ribs, and a pile of pickles. Eat on butcher paper in the front room. Don’t take the sauce bottles.

11:15 — Walk Davis Street.

Allen’s Alley is one block west at 505 East Davis. Eleven independent shops — handmade jewelry, quilted clothing, original art, fresh sourdough from Swoonworthy. Most tenants are on-site so you can ask about their work. Plan thirty to forty-five minutes here.

Walk back east toward the BBQ joint. Davis Street has antique shops, more storefronts, and downtown murals worth a slow look. Look up — old painted ads on brick walls.

12:30 — Oil Patch Museum.

The Central Texas Oil Patch Museum is free and downtown, in the Walker Brothers Mercantile building. Plan twenty minutes. The 15-minute video about Edgar B. Davis — the wildcatter who discovered oil here in 1922 — is the whole town story in one sitting.

1:00 — Drive to Zedler Mill.

A short drive. Zedler Mill Park sits on the San Marcos River. 1874 grist mill, historic markers, picnic tables, walking path. Free, open until 3. If you brought a kayak, put in here.

2:30 — Coffee or a second barbecue stop.

Luling Bar-B-Q is on the east end of Davis at 709, if you’re still hungry or want to compare smokehouses. They’re open until 7 on Saturday. Or grab coffee somewhere downtown and let the food settle.

3:30 — Back to your car.

Head home full. Total mileage on foot inside Luling: maybe a mile. Total dollars spent: under $50 for a couple sharing meals.

When to come

• Friday or Saturday if you want all the shops open. Most close Sunday through Thursday.
• Avoid the last weekend in June — that’s the Watermelon Thump. Streets are closed, parking is impossible, and most downtown shops are closed for the festival.
• The Wine Crawl is its own occasion — once a year, in spring — and worth planning around if you can. Downtown fills with people walking shop to shop with a glass in hand. Fun if that’s your speed.
• Music on Main Friday evening outdoor concerts happen right downtown on select Fridays through the warm months — free live music, family block-party feel, downtown open late. Not a Saturday event, but worth knowing if you’re flexible on when you drive in.

What to skip on a first visit

San Marcos and Lockhart are nearby and tempting. If you only have a day, save those for next time and stay in Luling. Trying to do all three towns in one trip means you don’t really do any of them.
